Why add an awning?
A retractable awning turns a patio into somewhere you can sit comfortably, even through the middle of a sunny day. You pull it out when you want shade, and wind it back in when you'd like the sun or when the weather turns.
Types of awning
- Patio awnings: the classic folding-arm awning, and the one most homeowners start with.
- Electric awnings: a motor extends and retracts the awning for you, which is especially handy on larger awnings.
- Cassette awnings: when the awning is closed, the fabric and arms fold away into a protective case.
- Commercial awnings: for shopfronts, cafés and hospitality businesses.
Things to consider
- Wall and fixings: awnings are heavy and put a lot of strain on their fixings, so the wall needs to be suitable. If you're not sure about yours, don't worry — we'll check it when we visit.
- Projection: this is how far the awning reaches out from the wall, and it decides how much shade you get. We'll help you work out the right size for the area you want to sit in.
- Weather: awnings are made for sun, not storms. We'd always suggest winding yours in when it's windy or raining heavily.
- Consent: for a commercial or listed building, it's worth checking whether you need permission before going ahead.
Our awnings come from Base, made in the UK
All of our awnings are supplied by Base Awnings & Blinds, a UK manufacturer that builds each awning to order. That gives us a range to suit almost any wall, from a compact awning over a back door to a run of awnings across a café terrace.
- For homes: the fully cassetted Base Plus and Base Lite, the ultra-slim Epica and Epica Lite cassettes, the Armony Plus for wider patios, and the Italia Slim drop-arm awning for windows and balconies.
- For businesses: the Zenith full cassette for large terraces, the Calnova semi-cassette, the Arezzo for fitting under eaves, plus commercial canopies and traditional shop blinds. See commercial awnings.
Base awnings can be fitted with Somfy motors, wind and sun sensors, and options such as LED lighting and heaters on selected models. There are more than 200 acrylic fabrics to choose from, in plains and stripes, and we'll bring samples with us so you can see them against your house.
