Comfortable, safe and practical
Window coverings in a care home have to work hard. Residents need comfortable rooms with good light control and privacy, while staff need products that are safe, durable and quick to clean. We'll help you balance both.
Safety first
Loose cords and chains are best avoided in a care home. Motorised, spring-operated and wand-controlled blinds (where a slim rod is used instead of a cord) all offer cord-free operation. If you have specific safety requirements for certain areas, talk to us and we'll recommend suitable systems.
Easy to look after
For dining rooms, bathrooms and other busy areas, we'd usually suggest wipe-clean fabrics or slats, as they're quick to keep clean. Flame-retardant fabrics are available on many ranges too.
Contract fabrics for care home blinds
For care homes, we often suggest contract fabrics designed for busy, shared settings. Blindtex ranges include antibacterial and flame-retardant fabrics that wipe clean, which suits bedrooms, bathrooms and dining rooms. In lounges and conservatories, screen fabrics such as Decora Uniview take the glare off bright days while still letting residents see the garden. You can compare the options on our commercial and healthcare fabrics page, and if you have a specification to meet, tell us and we'll guide you to suitable fabrics.
Rooms that feel like home
A care home shouldn't feel clinical. In residents' bedrooms, we'd usually suggest blackout or dim-out blinds for restful sleep, perhaps paired with curtains for a warmer, more homely look. Some residents like to bring their own colours and patterns, and we can often work with that while keeping to safe, practical systems.
Controls should be easy for residents with limited grip or mobility. Wands, spring-operated blinds and motorised blinds with simple Somfy wall switches or remotes are all worth considering, and staff can open and close a run of blinds together. We'll talk through what suits each room.
Upkeep and spares
Over time, blinds in busy areas will need attention. We can keep a record of the fabrics and systems fitted in your home, so a damaged blind can be repaired or replaced to match. See our repairs and spares page.
For day-to-day care, most fabrics can be vacuumed on a low setting or wiped with a damp cloth, and wipe-clean contract fabrics can be cleaned more often without wearing. If you're refurbishing in stages, we can keep the same fabrics and colours throughout, so newer rooms sit comfortably alongside the ones done first.
Minimal disruption
We know a care home is first and foremost the residents' home. We survey the building, agree a schedule with you and fit room by room, working around residents' routines. For clinical settings, see our healthcare blinds page.
