Why cord safety matters
Young children can become entangled in looped cords and chains. The risk is greatest where a cot, bed, sofa or chair sits near a window, because it gives a child something to climb on. The reassuring part is that the risk is easy to reduce, and we're glad to help you do it.
How we keep blinds safe
- Every blind we supply meets child safety requirements.
- We fit the right safety device for each blind — a chain tensioner, a cleat (a small hook on the wall to wind the cord around) or a breakaway connector.
- We place the controls sensibly and explain how the safety devices work before we leave.
- If there are children in the house, we'll suggest cord-free options first.
Simple checks at home
- Take a look at every blind in the house, especially in children's rooms.
- Keep cords and chains out of reach, and never knot them together.
- Move cots, beds and furniture a child could climb on away from windows.
- Check that tensioners are fixed to the wall and that cleats are being used.
- If you're unsure about an older blind, ask us and we'll take a look.
The Make it Safe campaign
As members of the British Blind & Shutter Association, we support Make it Safe, the association's campaign to raise awareness of blind cord safety. You can read more in our child safety guide.
Styles & options
Child-safe options we recommend
Motorised blinds
There are no cords or chains at all — you control them with a remote, a switch or an app.
Perfect Fit® blinds
These fix to the window frame itself, and most styles have no loose cords.
Shutters
No cords or chains to worry about, and they're easy to wipe clean.
Wand-operated verticals and venetians
You tilt the slats with a rigid wand rather than a cord, so there's nothing to form a loop.
Chain tensioners
These hold the chain taut against the wall so it can't form a loop.
Breakaway connectors
These are designed to come apart if pressure is put on the cord.
