Choosing a shutter material

All our shutters are made to measure, but they're not all made from the same material, and the right choice really depends on the room. Here's how we'd usually think about it.

  • Faux wood — a moisture-resistant composite, which makes it ideal for bathrooms, en-suites and kitchens.
  • MDF — a smooth painted finish for dry rooms, often at a more accessible price.
  • Hardwood — lighter, natural timber that can be painted or stained.

Shutters in wet rooms

Steam and condensation can affect natural timber over time. Faux wood shutters are designed for these conditions, so you can have the look of shutters in your bathroom without worrying about them warping.

Our faux wood shutter ranges

We offer two faux wood shutter ranges made from high-quality, water-resistant PVC, including a UK-made option. Between them there's a choice of louvre sizes — 63mm, 76mm and 89mm, including a slimmer urban-style 89mm louvre — and up to nine colours, from bright white to soft neutrals. They can be made as full height, tier-on-tier, café style or tracked shutters. We'll bring samples to your appointment so you can see the finishes and louvre sizes for yourself.

Styles to suit the window

Faux wood shutters are available as full height, tier-on-tier and café style. If you'd like to compare them side by side, our shutters buying guide is a good place to start.

Colours, fabrics & finishes

Materials and finishes

Faux wood shutters are made from a moisture-resistant composite with a painted finish, which is why we suggest them for bathrooms and kitchens. MDF shutters are made from engineered board, painted for a smooth finish and best suited to dry rooms. Hardwood shutters are lighter and can be stained to show the grain. We'll bring samples of each to your appointment, so you can see and feel the difference.

Questions & answers

Your questions about faux wood shutters

Which shutters are best for a bathroom?

For a bathroom, we'd usually recommend faux wood shutters. They're designed to cope with humidity and won't warp the way natural timber or MDF can.

What's the difference between MDF and faux wood?

MDF is a painted engineered board that's best suited to dry rooms. Faux wood is a moisture-resistant composite, so it's the one we'd suggest for bathrooms and kitchens.

Are faux wood shutters heavier than hardwood?

Yes, slightly. For very large panels we may recommend hardwood instead, and we'll talk you through this at your appointment.

Are faux wood shutters suitable for bathrooms?

Yes. Our faux wood shutter ranges are made from water-resistant PVC, so they cope well with steam and condensation in bathrooms, en-suites and kitchens.
