Why made-to-measure curtains?
Ready-made curtains only come in a handful of sizes, and most windows don't fit neatly into any of them. Made-to-measure curtains are sized to your window and to the track or pole they hang from, so they sit at the right length, gather evenly and draw fully clear of the glass when they're open.
The key choices
Heading
The heading is how the curtain is gathered at the top, and it shapes the whole look. Wave, eyelet, pencil pleat and pinch pleat headings each give a different look, from relaxed and modern to tailored and formal. If you're not sure, we'll talk you through each one.
Lining
A lining is the layer sewn behind the fabric you see. It protects the fabric and changes how the curtain performs: standard linings give the curtain body, blackout linings darken bedrooms, and thermal linings add an extra layer for colder rooms. For a bedroom, we'd usually suggest blackout.
Tracks and poles
The hardware affects both how the curtains look and how easily they move. You'll find the differences explained on our curtain tracks & poles page.
Things to consider
- Length: curtains can be floor-length, sill-length or finish just below the sill. We'll help you decide what suits the window and whatever sits beneath it.
- Stack-back: when curtains are open, the fabric gathers at each side of the window. Extending the track a little past the frame keeps more of the glass clear, so you don't lose daylight.
- Radiators: long curtains hanging over a radiator can trap its heat behind them, so we'll point this out if there's one under the window.
Measuring and fitting
We measure and fit curtains, tracks and poles ourselves, so you don't need to worry about getting the sizes right — book a free home appointment and we'll take it from there.
Choosing guide
Choosing a curtain heading
Wave
Soft, even S-shaped folds that run along a track. A clean, modern look that suits contemporary rooms.
Eyelet
Rings set into the fabric slide along a pole, giving a relaxed, contemporary look that's easy to draw.
Pencil pleat
Gathered pleats across the top. A versatile, traditional heading that's easy to live with.
Pinch pleat
Tailored hand-style pleats in neat groups, for a more formal and elegant finish.
Blackout & thermal linings
Worth considering for bedrooms you'd like darker, and for rooms that tend to feel cold.
Tracks & poles
The hardware that finishes the look. We'll help you pick one that suits your heading.
Room by room
Ideas by room and window
Bedrooms
Blackout-lined curtains help keep the room darker for sleeping.
Living rooms
Curtains add warmth, colour and texture, and make a room feel cosier in the evening.
Bay windows
A bent track follows the shape of the bay, so the curtains draw smoothly round it.
Patio doors
We plan the curtains to draw fully clear, so they don't get in the way of the doors.
Layering
Curtains can hang over blinds or shutters, giving you two layers to work with.
Tall windows
Full-length curtains make the most of the height and give a real sense of drama.
