Curtains made for your windows

Made-to-measure curtains are cut to the width and drop (the length from top to bottom) your window needs, with enough fullness — extra fabric — for the heading you've chosen. That's what makes them hang evenly, finish at the floor or sill in the right place and draw fully clear of the window.

Choosing fabric and lining

The fabric sets the mood of the room, while the lining decides how the curtain performs. Blackout linings darken bedrooms, and thermal linings add an extra layer at the window. If you're not sure which you need, we'll talk it through with you.

Choosing a heading for made-to-measure curtains

The heading is the way the top of the curtain is gathered, and it changes both the look and the hardware you'll need. Pencil pleat is traditional and versatile, pinch pleat is more tailored and formal, eyelet is relaxed and runs on a pole, and wave gives soft, even folds on a compatible track. If you're torn, we'd usually suggest thinking about how formal the room is and whether you'd like the track or pole on show. You can compare them all on our curtains page.

Fabrics and linings

We work with fabric collections including Decora's The Fabric Box and Nuvo, so you can see plains, textures and patterns side by side. Heavier fabrics hang in deeper folds and feel cosier in winter, while lighter fabrics give a softer, more relaxed look.

  • Standard lining: gives the curtain body, helps it hang well and protects the face fabric from sunlight.
  • Blackout lining: stops light passing through the fabric, so it's usually our suggestion for bedrooms and nurseries.
  • Thermal lining: adds an extra layer at the window, which many people like in colder rooms.

Getting the measurements right

Three things decide how made-to-measure curtains look: the width of the track or pole, the drop, and the fullness. Fullness is the extra fabric that creates the folds — too little and the curtains look flat when closed, too much and they can feel bulky when open. We'll also plan for stack-back, so the curtains clear the glass when they're open, and agree with you whether they should finish at the sill, below it or just above the floor.

Because we measure and fit everything ourselves, awkward details such as a radiator under the window, an uneven floor or a bay are taken into account before anything is made. For bays, have a look at bay window curtains.

  • Prints & patterns

A good choice if you'd like to make the window a feature of the room.

  • Velvets

Rich, heavier fabrics that bring depth and weight to a room.

  • Sheers & voiles

Light fabrics that filter daylight and give you privacy during the day.

  • Linings

Choose standard, blackout or thermal, depending on how dark or warm you'd like the room.

Materials and finishes

Curtain fabrics range from light sheers to heavy velvets. A fabric's weight changes how it hangs, while the lining affects how much light and draught it keeps out. We're happy to talk you through the difference.

Best for

Where made-to-measure curtains work well

  • Living rooms

Curtains bring warmth and texture to the room you spend your evenings in.

  • Bedrooms

We'd usually suggest a blackout lining to help keep the room dark.

  • Tall windows

Full-length curtains make the most of the height.

  • Bay windows

Hung on a track shaped to follow the bay.

  • Layered windows

Curtains can hang over blinds or voiles, giving you two layers to work with.

  • Period homes

Traditional headings suit older properties and their features.

Questions & answers

Your questions about made-to-measure curtains

How long should curtains be?

Floor-length curtains tend to look the most elegant. If there's a radiator or furniture under the window, sill-length is often more practical. We'll advise when we measure.

How wide should curtains be?

It depends on the heading you choose. Each heading needs a different amount of fabric fullness to hang well, but you don't need to work this out — we calculate it for you.

Which curtain fabrics can I choose from?

We work with Decora's The Fabric Box and Nuvo collections, which cover plains, textures and patterns in a range of weights. We can show you samples at a home appointment or in our showroom, so you can see how each one looks in your own light and alongside your furnishings before you decide.

Do my curtains need to be lined?

We'd usually recommend it. A standard lining helps the curtain hang well and protects the fabric from sunlight, while a blackout or thermal lining adds darkness or an extra layer at the window. If you're not sure which suits a room, we'll talk you through the differences when we measure.

How should I look after made-to-measure curtains?

A light vacuum with a soft brush attachment keeps dust down, and opening them by the leading edge rather than pulling the fabric helps them hang well. Always check the care label before cleaning, as many lined curtains are best dry cleaned rather than washed.
