Blinds for learning spaces
Schools ask a lot of their blinds. Classrooms need to be bright enough to work in but dim enough for everyone to see the screen. Halls often have high windows that are hard to reach. Nurseries need darkness for naps, and safe controls throughout.
Safety first
Looped cords and chains can be a hazard for young children, so this is the first thing we think about in any school or nursery. We'll recommend options such as cordless, motorised or safely tensioned controls, and explain which suits each room. You can read more in our child safety guide.
Different rooms, different needs
- Nurseries and early years: child-safe blinds with no looped cords, in colours children enjoy, plus blackout so rest times are easier.
- Classrooms: durable roller or vertical blinds that control glare, so pupils can see boards and screens clearly.
- Halls and large spaces: vertical or motorised blinds, which make wide or high windows much easier to manage.
- Sunny, exposed rooms: solar-reflective fabrics can help these rooms stay more comfortable.
Blinds in a school get used every day, so we'll help you choose hard-wearing materials that stand up to it.
Fabrics for school blinds
Fabric choice matters in a school, both for how a room works and for keeping it clean. For classrooms with interactive screens, a dim-out fabric lets pupils see clearly without plunging the room into darkness. Screen fabrics, such as those in the Decora Uniview range, cut glare while keeping a view outside, which suits libraries, offices and staff rooms. Flame-retardant and antibacterial contract fabrics, including Blindtex ranges, are available too. If your school has a specification to meet, tell us and we'll guide you to suitable fabrics. You can see more on our commercial and healthcare fabrics page.
Making school blinds easy to live with
Blinds in a school need to be simple for staff to use and hard for anyone to damage. We'd usually suggest robust roller and vertical blinds, with controls fitted so they're easy for adults to reach. For high windows in halls and sports areas, motorised blinds with Somfy wall switches save staff climbing or using poles, and a whole run of windows can be opened or closed together.
For cleaning, most fabrics can be vacuumed on a low setting or wiped with a damp cloth. In dining halls, toilets and early years rooms, we'd suggest wipe-clean blinds, as they're quicker to keep hygienic.
Planning a school project
Many schools replace blinds in stages, a block or a corridor at a time. We'll survey the whole site if that helps, so you have a consistent specification to work from, and then fit in phases as your budget allows. That way, new blinds match those fitted earlier.
