How blackout curtains work
A blackout lining is sewn behind the curtain fabric and stops light passing through it. Because the lining is separate from the face fabric (the side you see in the room), you can choose any colour or pattern you like.
Reducing light gaps
Even with a blackout lining, a little light can creep in round the edges. These are the things we'd usually suggest to keep it to a minimum:
- Fit the track or pole above and wider than the window, so the curtains cover the frame fully.
- Use overlap arms, which let the two curtains cross over so they meet properly in the middle.
- Choose returns, where the curtain wraps back to the wall at each end to close the side gap.
- Layer the curtains with a blackout blind for the darkest result.
Choosing fabric and heading for blackout curtains
Because the blackout lining does the work of stopping light, you're free to choose the face fabric purely for the look you want. Decora's The Fabric Box and Nuvo collections are a good place to start. The heading affects how well the curtains close, too: curtains on a track can be set up to overlap neatly in the middle, while eyelet curtains on a pole may let a little light show along the top. We'll explain the differences so you can weigh up looks against darkness.
Blackout curtains for bedrooms and nurseries
A darker room can help children settle, and it's useful for anyone who sleeps during the day. In these rooms we'd usually suggest blackout curtains fitted high and wide, with returns and overlap arms, and often a blind behind them as well. If a curtain track has a cord, we'll make sure it's fitted safely and out of reach — you can read more in our child safety guide.
If you'd like the curtains to open and close without reaching behind furniture, an electric track with a Somfy curtain motor can be set on a timer or run from a remote. See motorised curtains for more.
Thermal linings and caring for blackout curtains
Blackout isn't the only lining to think about. A thermal lining adds an extra layer at the window and is often chosen for colder rooms where darkness matters less. We'll show you both side by side so you can decide room by room.
To keep blackout curtains in good condition, vacuum them lightly with a soft brush and avoid creasing the lining sharply when you take them down. Always check the care label before cleaning, as blackout-lined curtains are usually best dry cleaned.
