What are wave curtains?
Wave curtains hang in soft, even S-shaped folds along a track. It's a modern, minimal look, and the curtains hang evenly every time you draw them.
Where they work well
We'd usually suggest wave curtains for contemporary living rooms, wide windows and patio doors. It's worth knowing that the heading (the way the top of the curtain is gathered) changes how the curtain stacks when it's open and how formal the room feels.
Things to consider
- Hardware: the heading needs to match the track or pole, and wave curtains need a compatible track. You can read more on curtain tracks & poles.
- Fabric weight: heavier fabrics give deeper folds, while lighter fabrics look softer. We'll help you see the difference before you decide.
- Stack-back: when they're open, curtains gather at the sides of the window. We'll plan the track width so the glass stays clear and you keep your daylight.
Why choose wave curtains?
Wave curtains are made to hang in regular, even folds that look the same each time you open or close them. That neat, consistent finish suits modern interiors, and it works particularly well on wide windows and patio doors where a long run of curtain is on show. Because the folds are set by the track, the curtains also glide smoothly from one end to the other.
Fabrics, linings and motorised wave curtains
Most fabrics can be made up with a wave heading, though lighter and medium-weight fabrics often show the soft folds best. We'd usually suggest comparing options from Decora's The Fabric Box and Nuvo collections, with a blackout lining for bedrooms or a thermal lining for colder rooms.
Because wave curtains run on a track, they're a good match for an electric system. We use Somfy curtain motors, which you can run from a remote, wall switch or timer, through the Somfy TaHoma app, or by voice with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. See motorised curtains for more.
Measuring for wave curtains
We measure the track width, the drop and the space at each side for the curtains to stack back clear of the glass. Wave curtains are often hung from a ceiling-fixed track, or close to the ceiling, which can make a room feel taller and helps cut down light over the top. We'll check what's above the window and talk you through the options. Wave curtains also need a little room at each end of the track to stack neatly, so on a narrow window we'll check there's space either side before recommending them. If your window is in a bay, have a look at bay window curtains.
