What are Venetian blinds?
Venetian blinds are made of horizontal slats joined by cords or tapes. You tilt the slats to adjust the light, or raise the blind so the slats stack at the top of the window. They're one of the most precise ways to control light and privacy as the day goes on.
Aluminium, wood or faux wood?
Venetian blinds come in three main materials, and the room usually decides which one we'd suggest. Aluminium is slim, light and practical, so it's a natural fit for kitchens, bathrooms and offices. Real wood brings warmth and texture to living rooms and bedrooms (see our wooden blinds page). Faux wood gives a similar look to real wood but copes better with moisture.
Privacy and light control
- Tilt the slats upward to keep your privacy and still get daylight, as people outside can't see in.
- Tilt the slats downward to bounce light onto the ceiling or reduce glare.
- Raise the blind whenever you want a clear window.
Venetian blinds won't make a room fully dark, because a little light passes between the slats. In bedrooms, many people pair them with curtains.
Things to consider
- Cleaning: slats collect dust, so they need a regular wipe. Our care guide explains how.
- Stack height: when the blind is raised, the slats stack at the top. Wood slats are thicker, so the stack is deeper.
- Weight: real wood blinds on wide windows are heavy, so we may suggest splitting them into two to keep them easy to use.
Measuring and fitting
We measure every window ourselves at a free home appointment, checking how deep the recess (the opening the window sits in) is, where the handles are and where the stack will sit. Our own team then fits every blind, so you don't have to worry about getting the details right.

Lightweight, practical and available in lots of colours, including metallic, textured and wood-effect finishes. The wood-effect options give you a warmer look with the practicality of metal.
Real wood
Natural timber slats with visible grain, in painted and stained finishes. You'll find more on our wooden blinds page.
Faux wood
A wood-look slat that copes better with moisture than real wood, so it's a good choice for kitchens and bathrooms.
