What makes a blind 'blackout'?
A blackout blind uses a fabric with a coating or lining that stops light passing through. That's different from dim-out fabrics, which soften the light but still let some through. For bedrooms and nurseries, blackout is usually what we'd suggest. Blackout fabric is available on roller, Roman, pleated, vertical and Perfect Fit® blinds, so you can choose the style you like first.
Why light still gets in
The fabric may block light completely, but light can still find its way through the small gaps around the blind. This is the part that often surprises people, and there are a few ways we can reduce it:
- Fit outside the recess — the recess is the opening your window sits in, and fitting the blind just outside it lets the blind overlap the window.
- Use side channels or a framed Perfect Fit® system, which help close off the gaps at the edges.
- Add a cassette at the top of the blind to cover the roll of fabric and help stop light above it.
- Layer with curtains — a blackout blind plus blackout curtains is the most effective combination if you want the room as dark as possible.
Choosing a style
Roller blinds are the simplest blackout option and a good place to start. Roman blinds with blackout lining give a softer look, and Perfect Fit® blinds suit tilt-and-turn windows. Our blackout blinds guide covers this in more detail if you'd like to read more.
Measuring and fitting
Getting the fit right is the key to a darker room, so we measure and fit every blind ourselves. We'll check where the light is likely to get in and talk you through the options — book a free home appointment.

Blackout pleated
Slim, neat blinds that also work well on roof windows.
Perfect Fit® blackout
Framed blinds that sit close to the glass to help reduce light gaps.
Side channels
Channels down each side that help block light at the edges.
Layered with curtains

Colours, fabrics & finishes
Materials and finishes
Blackout fabrics have a coating or lining that stops light passing through. They come in many colours, so you don't have to choose a dark blind — the colour facing into the room can be as light as you like.
