Why shutters suit bay windows
A bay window is often the focal point of a room, but it can be tricky to dress. Curtains need a bent track and a lot of fabric, and blinds need one for each section. Shutters are made to follow the shape of the bay, so the whole window becomes one finished feature.
How bay window shutters are made
We have a frame made to the exact angles of your bay, with posts at each corner. Panels are then fitted to each section, and the rails are lined up across the whole bay so it looks neat from every angle.
Things to consider
- Measuring: bays are rarely perfectly symmetrical, so we measure every angle. You don't need to worry if yours isn't quite even.
- Window seats and radiators: we'll check the panels can open freely around them.
Choosing a style for your bay
Bay window shutters can be made in any of the main styles. Full height shutters give the cleanest look and suit most bays. Tier-on-tier shutters let you keep the bottom closed and open the top, which is why we often suggest them for a front room that faces the road. Café style covers only the lower half, keeping the bay bright. In a bedroom bay, where you'll want a darker room, Shutter & Shade is worth a look.
Things to check in a bay
- Handles and opening windows: bays often have several opening sections. We'll check every handle clears the louvres (the tilting slats) and that you can still open the windows.
- Depth: the frame can sit inside the bay or just outside the recess. Shallow sills sometimes mean fitting on the face, and we'll explain what suits yours.
- Curtain tracks and poles: if you'd like to keep your curtains, we'll check there's room for the shutter panels to open in front of them.
- Light: tilting the louvres lets you direct light across the whole bay. At night a little light shows around the edges, as with any shutter.
Choosing louvre size, colour and material
Louvres come in 63mm, 76mm and 89mm. On a large bay, 89mm louvres give a more open view; on a smaller or cottage-style bay, 63mm or 76mm often look more in proportion. We'd always suggest the same louvre size across every section so the bay reads as one. Shutters are made in hardwood, MDF and water-resistant faux wood (PVC). White and soft neutrals keep a bay looking light, while a colour matched to your woodwork can look very smart. We'll also show you the tilt rod options, hidden or at the front.
Looking after bay window shutters
Dust the louvres with a soft cloth every so often and wipe faux wood with a damp cloth if needed; avoid soaking wooden shutters. Bay window shutters are typically fitted in around two weeks from order. Our care and maintenance guide has more tips.
