What are Roman blinds?

A Roman blind is a panel of fabric that folds up into neat horizontal pleats as you raise it. When it's lowered, it lies flat against the window like a tailored panel. The fabric is usually lined, which gives the blind body and helps it hang nicely.

Roman blinds sit somewhere between a blind and a curtain. You get the softness, colour and texture of fabric, but they take up less space. That makes them a good choice where curtains would be awkward, such as above a radiator, a window seat or a kitchen worktop.

Privacy and light control

Like roller blinds, Roman blinds are either up or down, so the lining decides how much light comes through. A standard lining gives you privacy and softens the daylight. For bedrooms, we'd usually suggest a blackout lining. Thermal linings add an extra layer of insulation, which can make a room feel cosier on colder evenings.

Things to consider

  • The stack: when the blind is raised, the folds gather at the top of the window. On shorter windows, we'd often fit the blind above the recess (the opening the window sits in) so more of the glass stays clear.
  • Pattern placement: stripes and large prints need to be positioned carefully so they look right across the folds. We'll take care of this for you.
  • Steam and splashes: because Roman blinds are made of fabric, they're better kept away from hobs and sinks.
  • Weight: large Roman blinds are heavier, which can make them harder to raise by hand. If that's a concern, motorisation can help.

Measuring and fitting

Roman blinds need precise measuring to look right, because the fold sizes, the stack height and the fixing position all depend on your window. We measure at a free home appointment and our own team fits every blind, so you can leave those details to us.

Styles & options

Choosing your roman blinds

  • Classic flat fold

Crisp, even pleats that stack neatly at the top when you raise the blind.

  • Cascade / waterfall

Overlapping folds that stay on show even when the blind is down.

  • Relaxed

A gentle curve at the bottom edge, for a softer, more informal look.

  • Standard lining

Gives the blind body and helps protect the front fabric.

  • Blackout lining

Stops light coming through the fabric, which is ideal for bedrooms.

  • Thermal lining

Adds an extra layer to help your room feel cosier.

Colours, fabrics & finishes

Materials and finishes

With Roman blinds, the fabric is the star. Plains and textured weaves give a calm, tailored look, while prints and stripes turn the window into a feature.

Choosing fabric

  • Plains and linen-look weaves for a relaxed, natural feel
  • Velvets and heavier textures to add warmth in living rooms and bedrooms
  • Stripes and prints if you'd like some pattern — we'll check how the pattern falls across the folds

Lining

The lining changes how the blind hangs and how much light comes through. In bedrooms, people often choose blackout or thermal linings.

Best for

Where roman blinds work well

  • Living rooms

A lovely way to bring colour, pattern and texture into the room.

  • Bedrooms

We'd usually suggest blackout-lined Roman blinds to help you sleep better.

  • Dining rooms

A tailored look that sits well alongside upholstered chairs.

  • Kitchen windows

A soft touch where curtains wouldn't fit — we'd just keep them away from the hob.

  • Bay windows

We'd fit an individual blind to each section of the bay.

  • Period homes

A classic look that suits traditional windows.

Features & options

Options to consider

  • Cord, chain or motorisedChoose to raise the blind by hand or with a motor.
  • Inside or outside the recessFitting outside helps the folds clear the glass when the blind is up.
  • Choice of liningChoose standard, blackout or thermal, depending on the room.
  • Headrail finishThe headrail (the rail at the top) is neatly hidden behind the fabric.
  • Matching fabricsCoordinate your blind with cushions or curtains, if you'd like.
  • Child-safe controlsSafety devices are fitted on cords and chains.

Motorised & smart control

Motorisation options

Roman blinds can be motorised, which keeps the folds even every time the blind goes up and takes cords away from the window. That makes motorised Roman blinds a good choice for tall windows and homes with children. We use Somfy motors and controls, so you can choose a remote, wall switch, timer or sun and wind sensors, or use the Somfy TaHoma app and voice control with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. Just ask and we'll talk you through which options suit your windows.

Questions & answers

Your questions about roman blinds

Do Roman blinds block out light?

With a blackout lining, Roman blinds stop light coming through the fabric. A little light can still come round the edges, so for a bedroom we'd often suggest fitting the blind outside the recess. We'll talk this through with you when we measure.

How much window do Roman blinds cover when raised?

When the blind is raised, the fabric gathers into a stack at the top of the window, which covers part of the glass. Fitting the blind above the recess reduces how much of the window it covers, and we'll show you the options when we measure.

Are Roman blinds suitable for kitchens?

They can be, as long as they're in the right spot. We'd suggest keeping them away from the hob and choosing a fabric that's easy to look after. Near a sink, a roller or faux-wood blind is usually the more practical choice.

Can I have Roman blinds made in my own fabric?

Please ask us. Whether your own fabric can be used depends on its weight, width and pattern, and we're happy to take a look and let you know.
