How motorised blinds work
A motorised blind has a small motor built into the headrail (the bar at the top of the blind) or the roller. Instead of pulling a chain or cord, you use a remote, wall switch or app to raise and lower it. Many blinds can be grouped, so several open or close together at the same time.
Why choose motorised blinds?
- Convenience: open every blind in a room with one button.
- Hard-to-reach windows: stairwells, roof windows and tall glazing, where reaching a cord or chain isn't practical.
- Child safety: there are no looped cords or chains, which is reassuring if you have young children.
- Accessibility: easier for anyone who finds manual controls difficult.
- Scheduling: your blinds can open and close on a timer, so you don't have to remember to do it yourself.
Battery or mains?
Battery-powered motors avoid wiring and suit most homes. Mains-powered motors need an electrical supply near the window and suit large or frequently used blinds. If you're not sure which you need, don't worry — we'll recommend the right option for each window.
Smart home control
If you'd like to control your blinds with an app or your voice, the Somfy TaHoma app lets you do that from your phone, and it works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. Tell us which systems you already use and we'll talk you through how it all fits together. See smart blinds.
Measuring and fitting
We measure and fit motorised blinds ourselves. They're best tried in person, so come and use them in our showroom or book a free home appointment.
Powered by Somfy
We use Somfy motors and controls on our motorised blinds, so you can choose a remote, wall switch or timer, add sun and wind sensors, or control everything through the Somfy TaHoma app and voice control with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. Find out more about Somfy motorisation.
