Louvred roof pergola over a garden patio

Outdoor Living

Pergolas

A pergola turns your patio into an outdoor room. You can choose a louvred roof that tilts to let in light and air, or a retractable fabric roof that opens to the sky — and add side screens, lighting and heating if you'd like them. We measure and fit across Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough and the rest of Teesside.

What is a pergola?

A modern pergola is an aluminium frame with a roof that you control. It sits over a patio or part of the garden, either fixed to the house or standing on its own, and creates a sheltered outdoor room you can use far more often than an open patio.

Louvred or retractable?

  • Louvred pergolas have roof blades (louvres) that you tilt to let in light and air, or close to keep out the rain. They're a good choice if you want fine control over sun and shade.
  • Retractable pergolas have a fabric roof that slides open on sunny days and closes again when it's wet or too bright.

Make it a room

You can add drop-down side screens for privacy and protection from the wind, LED lighting for the evenings and heaters for cooler months. With motorised controls, you can adjust everything without leaving your seat.

Things to think about

  • Which way the patio faces, and when you tend to use it most.
  • Whether the house wall is suitable for a wall-mounted frame.
  • Drainage — where the rainwater from the roof will go.
  • Planning or building regulations, which can apply to larger structures.

If you're not sure about any of these, don't worry — we'll look at all of it with you at a free site visit. If you'd prefer shade that folds completely away, have a look at awnings.

Questions & answers

Your questions about pergolas

What is the difference between a louvred and a retractable pergola?

A louvred pergola has aluminium blades you can tilt to adjust the light and airflow, and close to keep out the rain. A retractable pergola has a fabric roof that slides back to open the space to the sky. We'll talk you through both so you can see which suits how you use your garden.

Can a pergola be used in the rain?

Yes — a closed louvred roof or a retractable roof is designed to keep showers off. If your garden is exposed, side screens add protection from rain blown in by the wind.

Does a pergola need foundations?

It depends on the size, whether it's fixed to the wall or freestanding, and the ground it sits on. We'll assess all of this at the site visit and explain what's needed.

Do I need planning permission for a pergola?

Many garden pergolas don't need it, but the size, height, location and whether your home is listed can all make a difference. If you're unsure, check with your local council — we'll point out anything you should consider.
