Why choose shutters?
Interior shutters are fixed to the window frame and hinged, so they open like small doors. The louvres (the horizontal slats) can be tilted to let in as much or as little light as you like while keeping your privacy, and when you want a completely clear window the whole panel swings open. They give a crisp, architectural finish that we find suits period and contemporary homes equally well.
Choosing a shutter style
| Style | Covers | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Full height | The whole window | Simple, clean look |
| Tier-on-tier | Top and bottom separately | Flexible privacy and light |
| Café style | Lower part only | Street-facing privacy with light above |
| Bay window | Each angle of the bay | Bay windows |
| Tracked | Doors and wide openings | Bi-fold and patio doors |
| Solid panel | Whole window, no louvres | Darkness and period homes |
| Shutter & Shade | Shutter with a pleated blind behind | Darker bedrooms and nurseries |
Materials
Shutters come in different materials, including hardwoods, engineered woods and water-resistant materials that are well suited to bathrooms and kitchens. The right one depends on the room, the size of the panels and the finish you'd like, so please don't worry about choosing in advance — we'll talk you through the options at your appointment. You can also browse our advice on shutters by room.
Things to consider
- Clearance: shutters open into the room, so when we measure we'll check for anything that might get in the way, such as window handles, radiators, sills and furniture.
- Recess depth: the louvres need a little space to tilt. If your recess (the opening the window sits in) is shallow, we may suggest a frame that sits just outside it instead.
- Darkness: louvred shutters don't fully black out a room. If that matters to you, for a bedroom for example, we'll show you the options, such as Shutter & Shade.
- Investment: shutters cost more than most blinds, but they're designed to be a lasting part of the window rather than something you replace every few years.
Fitted in around two weeks
You don't have to wait months for shutters. Once you've ordered, our shutters are typically ready to fit in around two weeks, and we'll confirm the date with you.
Measuring and fitting
Shutters rely on precise measuring: the frame has to be square, the panels need to close neatly and the louvres should line up with your window's glazing bars. That's why we measure every window and fit every shutter ourselves. If you'd like to read more before your appointment, our shutters buying guide goes into more detail.
Choosing guide
Which shutter style is right for you?
Full height
One panel from top to bottom. It's the cleanest, simplest look and suits most windows.
Tier-on-tier
Top and bottom panels open separately, so you can let light in above and keep privacy below.
Café style
Covers just the lower part of the window, giving privacy while leaving the top clear.
Tracked
Panels slide or fold across, which makes them a good choice for doors and wide openings.
Solid panel
No louvres, so you get the most darkness and a traditional, period look.
Shaped
Made to fit arches, angles and circular windows that standard shutters can't.
Room by room
Ideas by room and window
Bay windows
We make frames that follow each angle of the bay, so it looks neat all the way round.
Street-facing rooms
Tilt the louvres to keep your privacy from the street while still letting light in.
Bedrooms
For a darker room, we'd usually suggest solid panels or shutters with a blind behind.
Bathrooms
We'll guide you to shutter materials that are suited to moisture and steam.
Patio & French doors
Tracked or hinged door shutters, depending on how your doors open.
Period homes
Classic café and solid panel styles sit naturally in older properties.
