What are roller blinds?
A roller blind is a single piece of fabric that winds up around a tube at the top of the window. You pull the chain (or press a button, if it's motorised) and the fabric rolls down flat. When it's up, the blind almost disappears, leaving your window and the view clear.
That simplicity is why roller blinds are the most popular blind in UK homes. They're compact and work in almost any room. Because the look comes from the fabric, they can be as quiet or as bold as you like.
Privacy and light control
Roller blinds are either up or down, with no slats to tilt, so the fabric you choose decides how the room feels when the blind is lowered:
- Light-filtering fabrics give you privacy while keeping the room bright.
- Dim-out fabrics take the edge off bright daylight.
- Blackout fabrics stop light coming through the fabric, which helps with sleep and with watching screens.
- Screen fabrics reduce glare while still letting you see out.
If you'd like privacy in the day and darkness at night, it's worth looking at a day & night blind, or pairing a roller blind with curtains.
Things to consider
- Light gaps: when a roller blind is fitted inside the recess (the opening the window sits in), it leaves a small gap at each side. You'll rarely notice it with light-filtering fabrics, but it matters more for blackout, and we'll talk you through the options when we measure.
- Handles and depth: window handles and shallow recesses can affect where the blind fits. If handles are in the way, a reverse-roll fabric can help the blind clear them.
- Very wide windows: on large windows, it's often better to split the blind into two or more.
- Moisture: for bathrooms, we'd point you towards moisture-resistant fabrics.
Measuring and fitting
We measure every window ourselves at a free home appointment, checking the recess, the handles and which side you'd like the controls. Our own team then fits the blinds, so the measurements and installation are handled together and you don't need to worry about getting either wrong.

Styles & options
Choosing your roller blinds
Light-filtering
Softens daylight and gives you privacy, while still keeping the room bright.
Dim-out
Cuts out most of the light, which suits lounges and rooms where you watch TV.
Blackout
A coated fabric that stops light coming through — ideal for bedrooms, nurseries and rooms where you watch TV.
Sunscreen / screen fabrics
Reduce glare and heat, while still letting you see the view outside.
Wipe-clean & moisture-resistant
Practical fabrics that cope well with kitchens and bathrooms.
Patterned & textured
Prints, weaves and linen-look fabrics, if you'd like a window to stand out.
Colours, fabrics & finishes
Materials and finishes
A roller blind is made from a single piece of fabric, so choosing the fabric is the main decision. Plain colours keep a room feeling calm, while textures and prints add a bit of character.
Fabric types
- Light-filtering and sheer fabrics for rooms where you want plenty of daylight
- Dim-out and blackout fabrics for bedrooms and rooms where you watch TV
- Screen fabrics that cut glare but still let you see out
- Wipe-clean and moisture-resistant fabrics for kitchens and bathrooms
- Colourful prints and children's designs, including blackout options for nurseries
- Thermal fabrics that add an extra layer at the window
Many roller fabrics have matching vertical or pleated fabrics, so you can coordinate blinds across a room. Fabric looks different in your own light, which is why we bring samples to every free home appointment.
Best for
Where roller blinds work well
Bedrooms & nurseries
We'd usually suggest blackout fabric, often with side channels to limit light around the edges.
Kitchens
Wipe-clean fabrics that sit neatly above worktops and sinks.
Bathrooms
Moisture-resistant fabrics that cope well with steam.
Home offices
Screen fabrics help cut glare on your monitor.
Living rooms
Layer them with curtains, or use them on their own for a clean look.
Awkward spaces
Compact headrails (the rail at the top) suit shallow recesses.
Features & options
Options to consider
- Chain or motorised operationChoose a side chain, or a motor you control by remote or app.
- Inside or outside the recessInside gives a neat finish; outside helps reduce light gaps. We'll advise when we measure.
- Cassette headrailA neat cover over the roller, for a tidier finish at the top.
- Reverse rollThe fabric rolls from the front, so it clears window handles.
- Shaped edges & trimsScalloped or shaped bottom edges, braids and decorative pulls, if you'd like a finishing touch.
- Child-safe controlsChain tensioners and safety devices, fitted to help keep children safe.
Motorised & smart control
Motorisation options
Roller blinds are one of the easiest styles to motorise. The motor sits hidden inside the roller tube, and we use Somfy motors and controls, so you can choose a remote, wall switch, timer or sun and wind sensors, or use the Somfy TaHoma app and voice control with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. Without cords or chains, motorised blinds are a good fit for high or hard-to-reach windows and for homes with children.
If you're not sure which motor and controls would suit your windows, just ask — we'll only recommend systems we can supply and fit ourselves.
