Heat and Glare Control

South and west-facing rooms, conservatories and glass extensions can overheat in summer and suffer glare on TVs and screens. The right combination of blinds, inside and out, makes them far more comfortable to use — and we'll help you work out what that combination is. We cover Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Darlington, Hartlepool and the surrounding area.

Why some rooms overheat

Sunlight passing through glass warms the room, and that warmth builds up — especially in conservatories, glass extensions and rooms facing south or west. Glare is a separate problem: bright light reflecting off screens and polished surfaces. It helps to know which one you're dealing with, as the answer isn't always the same.

Outside the glass

The most effective way to block heat is to shade the window from outside. External screens and awnings stop the sun before it gets in, rather than dealing with the warmth once it's inside.

Inside the glass

  • Reflective-backed fabrics help bounce sunlight back out of the window.
  • Cellular blinds trap air in their honeycomb cells, adding a layer of insulation.
  • Screen fabrics cut glare while still letting you see out.
  • Venetian blinds let you angle the light up towards the ceiling and away from your eyes.

Automate it

Smart blinds can lower on a schedule before the sun moves round, so rooms stay cooler even when you're not home.

Questions & answers

Your questions about heat and glare control

What's the most effective way to keep a room cool?

Shading outside the glass, such as external screens or an awning, is generally the most effective, because it stops the sun's heat before it gets in. Inside, reflective or insulating blinds help too, and we'll explain the difference at your home appointment.

How do I stop glare on my TV or computer?

Screen fabrics on roller blinds, venetian blinds and Allusion blinds all reduce glare while keeping some daylight and your view, so you don't have to sit in the dark to see the screen.

Do thermal blinds help in winter too?

Yes. Cellular and lined blinds add an extra layer at the window, which can help rooms feel less chilly near the glass on colder days.
