Shutters for unusual windows
Arched, angled and circular windows are often the most striking windows in a home, but they're also the hardest to dress. Shaped shutters follow the outline of the window, so you can control the light while still keeping the shape on show.
Things to consider
- Suitability: not every shape or size can have a shutter, so we'll check your window for you before going any further.
- Opening: some shapes allow panels that open, while others need fixed panels. We'll explain which applies to yours.
Where shaped window shutters work well
Shaped window shutters are made for windows a standard rectangle won't cover: arched tops, angled windows that follow a sloping ceiling, triangular gable windows, and round or half-moon windows. You'll often find these in hallways, landings, loft rooms and bedrooms. Because the shutter follows the outline of the glass, it gives a much tidier finish than trying to fit a blind or curtain to an awkward shape, and the window still reads as a feature.
Things to check with an unusual window
- Depth: shaped frames sometimes need a little more room. We'll check whether yours can sit inside the recess (the opening the window sits in) or is better fitted just outside it.
- Handles: on arched and angled windows, we'll make sure the shutter doesn't stop you reaching the window handle or opening the window.
- Light: on some shapes the louvres (the horizontal slats) can't be tilted, so we'll explain how much light control you'll have before you decide.
- Matching other windows: if the shaped window sits next to ordinary ones, we'll line up rails and louvres so they look like one set.
Choosing louvre size, colour and material
Louvres come in 63mm, 76mm and 89mm. On arched and smaller shaped windows we'd usually suggest one of the smaller sizes, as they tend to follow a curve more neatly. Shutters are made in hardwood, MDF and water-resistant faux wood (PVC), and we'll tell you which suit your particular shape; faux wood is the one to consider for a bathroom or a steamy room. A white or soft neutral keeps the attention on the shape of the window, while a colour matched to your woodwork can look very smart on a landing. We'll also show you the tilt rod options, hidden or at the front. See our full shutter range for the other styles.
Looking after shaped shutters
Run a soft cloth or duster along the louvres every so often, and wipe faux wood with a damp cloth if needed. Avoid soaking wooden shutters. Shutters are typically fitted in around two weeks from order, and we'll confirm the timing for your shape when we measure. Our care and maintenance guide has more tips.
