Darkness first
In most bedrooms, the priority is keeping out early sun on summer mornings and street lights at night. Blackout blinds stop light coming through the fabric, but how they're fitted makes the biggest difference, because that's what keeps the gaps around the edges small. We'll check this for you when we measure.
Ideas that work well
- Blackout roller + curtains: a simple blind at the window with blackout-lined curtains over it — the combination we'd usually suggest for the darkest room.
- Blackout Roman blinds: a softer look that suits smaller windows.
- Shutters with a blind behind: shutters for style, with a blackout blind behind them for darkness.
- Motorised blinds: open the blinds without getting out of bed — see motorised blinds.

Shift workers and light sleepers
If you sleep during the day, blackout blinds make the biggest difference. We'd suggest a blackout fabric with a fitting that limits gaps at the edges, plus curtains if you need the room fully dark.
Colour and pattern
Bedrooms are a good place to bring in pattern or a soft colour. A plain blind with patterned curtains — or the reverse — is an easy way to layer the look.
Children's rooms
