Built for steam
Natural wood can move in a steamy room, so for bathrooms and en-suites we recommend our water-resistant faux wood shutters. They look like painted timber but cope happily with moisture. See faux wood shutters.
Privacy without the gloom
Tilt the louvres to let daylight in while keeping your privacy, or choose café style shutters for the lower half only. Tier-on-tier shutters let you open the top for light and air.
Choosing bathroom shutters for your window
Most bathroom windows are smaller than those elsewhere in the house, and many already have frosted glass, so the choice usually comes down to how much privacy you want and how you like to open the window for fresh air. Café style shutters cover the lower half only, which keeps you private in the bath while the top of the window stays clear for daylight. Tier-on-tier shutters have separate top and bottom panels, so you can open the top for ventilation and keep the lower half closed. If you would like the whole window covered, a full height shutter is the neatest option. Most people choose white or a soft painted shade in a bathroom, as it keeps a small room feeling light, but we'll bring samples so you can see them against your tiles.
Measuring around tiles, sills and handles
Bathroom windows often sit in a shallow recess (the opening the window sits in), sometimes with tiles running into it. When we measure, we check the recess depth and how far the window handle sticks out, because the louvres (the slats you tilt) need room to turn without catching on it. If the recess is too shallow, we can fit the shutter on a frame just outside the opening instead. We'll also check whether the shutter needs to clear a windowsill, a cistern or the edge of the bath, so it opens freely every day.
Keeping bathroom shutters clean
Faux wood shutters are easy to look after. A wipe with a soft, damp cloth removes condensation marks and splashes, and a quick dust of the louvres every week or two keeps them looking fresh. We'd suggest opening the louvres after a bath or shower so air can move around the window, which helps the room dry out. There's more advice in our care and maintenance guide.
