Soft light for meals
Shutters let you soften bright daylight over the table and give you privacy in the evening. They suit both traditional dining rooms and open-plan kitchen-diners.
Finishes to match
Choose painted colours or wood stains to tie in with your furniture and flooring. We'll bring samples to your appointment.
Which style of dining room shutters?
Most dining rooms suit full height shutters, which cover the whole window and give a tidy, finished look. If the room faces the street, tier-on-tier shutters let you keep the lower panels closed for privacy while opening the top for daylight. In an open-plan kitchen-diner, it's worth using the same shutter style and colour throughout so the space looks joined up. Where the dining area opens onto the garden, tracked shutters or French door shutters keep the doors easy to use.
Louvre sizes and light over the table
Louvres are the slats you tilt to control the light. We offer 63mm, 76mm and 89mm louvres. Wider louvres give a more open view and suit larger windows, while narrower ones suit smaller windows. Angling the louvres lets you soften bright sunshine across the table at lunchtime, then close them fully for privacy in the evening. If the table sits right by the window, we'll check the panels can fold back past the chairs, and we may suggest bi-folding panels so they take up less room when open.
Finishes for dining room shutters
Dining rooms often have more wood on show than other rooms, from the table and chairs to a sideboard or floor. A wood stain can pick up those tones, while a painted white or soft neutral keeps the room light and lets the furniture stand out. If your dining room is open to the kitchen or living room, we'd usually suggest choosing one finish for the whole space.
Measuring, materials and care
We'll measure the depth of the recess (the opening the window sits in) and check how far the window handles stick out, so the louvres can turn freely. Hardwood, MDF and faux wood all work well in a dining room. Shutters are easy to keep clean, which helps in a room used for meals: a dust with a soft cloth, and a wipe with a damp cloth for any marks, is usually all they need. If you'd like curtains as well, we'll check there's space for the panels to fold back.
