Practical first

Kitchens get steamy and busy, so we usually recommend water-resistant faux wood shutters that wipe clean easily. See faux wood shutters.

Made around your kitchen

We measure around taps, handles and sills so the panels open freely. Café style and tier-on-tier shutters are popular above the sink.

Choosing kitchen shutters for your window

Kitchen windows are often above a sink or worktop, so the style needs to be easy to reach and open. Café style shutters cover the lower part of the window, giving privacy from the garden or street while leaving the top clear for daylight. Tier-on-tier shutters let you fold back just the top panels when you want more light or need to open the window. For a back door or patio doors in a kitchen-diner, tracked shutters slide aside so the doorway stays clear.

Measuring around taps, handles and recesses

We measure the depth of the recess (the opening the window sits in) and how far the window handle sticks out, because the louvres (the slats you tilt) need space to turn without knocking it. We also check the height of your tap, as a tall mixer tap can stop panels opening if it isn't allowed for. If the recess is shallow, the shutter can go on a frame just outside it. These are the details we'd always rather sort out at the measure than discover on fitting day. If there's a radiator or a deep sill under the window, we'll allow for that too.

Cleaning, colours and light

Water-resistant faux wood shutters wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth, which is handy for the odd cooking splash. A quick dust of the louvres every so often stops grease and dust building up. White and soft neutral shades are popular in kitchens as they help keep the room bright, but we'll bring a range of colours to compare against your units. Tilting the louvres lets daylight in while keeping your privacy. See our care and maintenance guide for more tips.

Questions & answers

Your questions about kitchen shutters

Can shutters go above a kitchen sink?

Yes. We measure carefully around taps, handles and sills, and often suggest café style or tier-on-tier shutters so the window can still open easily.

Which material is best for a kitchen?

Water-resistant faux wood is the most practical choice, as it copes with steam and is easy to wipe clean.

Will a tall tap stop kitchen shutters opening?

It can if it isn't allowed for, which is why we measure the height and position of your tap. Depending on the window, we might suggest café style or tier-on-tier shutters, or fit the shutter on a frame so the panels clear the tap and sill. We'll talk you through the options.

How do I clean kitchen shutters?

Water-resistant faux wood shutters wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth, which takes care of cooking splashes and steam marks. A regular dust of the louvres stops grease and dust building up. We'd avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners, as they can dull the finish.
