Shutters by Room

Living Room Shutters

In a living room, shutters give you a smart, finished look and make it easy to balance daylight, privacy and glare on the TV. They're especially lovely in bay windows. We measure and fit across Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough and the rest of Teesside.

A finished look

Shutters frame a window beautifully and suit both period and modern homes. In a bay window, we make frames that follow every angle, so it looks neat all the way round.

Light, privacy and glare

Tilt the louvres to let daylight in while keeping privacy from the street, or angle them to cut glare on the TV. Tier-on-tier shutters let you open the top and keep the bottom closed.

Choosing louvre size and style for living room shutters

Louvres are the angled slats that tilt open and closed. We offer 63mm, 76mm and 89mm louvres, and the right size mostly depends on your window. Larger louvres give a clearer view of the garden or street when open and suit big windows and bays, while smaller louvres sit more comfortably on narrow windows. Full height shutters are the most popular choice for living rooms, and tier-on-tier is useful if your window faces the street. If you have patio or French doors, French door shutters or tracked shutters keep the look consistent across the room.

Colours, finishes and other window treatments

Living room shutters come in painted colours and wood stains, so you can match them to your woodwork, flooring or furniture. Whites and off-whites keep a room feeling bright, while a stained finish can add warmth to a more traditional room. Shutters also sit well alongside curtains: some customers keep dress curtains either side for softness, as long as the panels have room to fold back. We'll check this when we visit. If you'd like extra softness on dark winter evenings, a pair of made-to-measure curtains over the shutters can make the room feel cosier.

Measuring, handles and care

When we measure, we check the depth of the window recess (the opening the window sits in) and how far your window handles stick out, so the louvres can tilt fully without catching. In a bay, we also measure each angle so the frame follows the shape neatly. Day to day, shutters need very little looking after: a dust with a soft cloth or the brush attachment on your vacuum keeps them clean. See our care and maintenance guide for more.

Questions & answers

Your questions about living room shutters

Are shutters good for bay windows?

Yes. We make frames that follow each angle of the bay, so the shutters look neat all the way round. See our bay window shutters page.

Which louvre size suits a living room?

For larger windows, wider 76mm or 89mm louvres give a contemporary look and more view. Smaller 63mm louvres suit smaller or period windows.

Can I keep curtains with living room shutters?

Yes, many people do. Dress curtains either side of the window add softness and frame the shutters nicely. We'd just check that the curtains and pole won't stop the shutter panels folding back fully, and we'll talk through the spacing when we measure.

How do I clean living room shutters?

Shutters are easy to look after. A regular dust with a soft cloth or the brush attachment on your vacuum keeps the louvres clean, and a lightly damp cloth takes care of any marks on painted finishes. There's more advice in our care and maintenance guide.
