Bedroom Shutters

Bedroom shutters give you privacy, a tidy look and control over the morning light. If you'd like a really dark room, we'll show you options that go further than standard louvres. We work across Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Yarm, Redcar and the towns around Teesside.

Sleep better

Shutters let you tilt the louvres for a soft, gentle light in the morning. If you'd like a properly dark room, Shutter & Shade adds a pleated blind behind the shutter, and solid panel shutters block light without louvres.

Safe for little ones

With no cords or chains, shutters are a reassuring choice for children's rooms. See our safety advice.

How dark can bedroom shutters get?

With the louvres (the slats you tilt) closed, shutters block most of the light, but a little will always show around the edges of the panels and between the slats. For most bedrooms that's fine, and many people like waking to a soft glow. If you're a light sleeper, work shifts or are choosing for a nursery, we'd usually suggest Shutter & Shade or solid panel shutters. Some customers also add blackout curtains for a cosy, layered look. Louvre size plays a part too: we offer 63mm, 76mm and 89mm louvres, and wider ones give a clearer view when open, while narrower ones suit smaller windows.

Privacy for front-facing bedrooms

If your bedroom looks onto the street or a neighbour's house, tier-on-tier shutters are a good choice. You can keep the lower panels closed for privacy and open the top ones to let daylight in. If there's a dressing table or chest of drawers under the window, we'll check there's room for the panels to fold back without knocking anything.

Measuring and choosing a finish

When we measure, we look at the depth of the recess (the opening the window sits in) and how far the window handle sticks out, so the louvres can tilt without catching. If the recess is shallow, we can fit the shutter on a frame around the outside instead. Soft whites and pale shades are popular in bedrooms because they keep the room calm and light, but we'll bring painted and stained samples so you can see them in your own light. Hardwood, MDF and faux wood all work well in a bedroom, and a regular dust is usually all they need. Our shutters buying guide explains the options in more detail.

Questions & answers

Your questions about bedroom shutters

Will shutters make my bedroom dark?

Louvred shutters let some light through the gaps. For a darker room, we'd suggest Shutter & Shade, which adds a pleated blind behind, or solid panel shutters.

Are shutters safe for children's rooms?

Yes. Shutters have no cords or chains, which makes them a reassuring choice for children's bedrooms and nurseries.

Can I add curtains to bedroom shutters?

Yes. Some people like the softer, layered look of curtains over shutters, and blackout curtains add extra darkness. We'd just check there's enough space for the shutter panels to open without the curtains getting in the way, and that the pole or track sits far enough out from the window.

Which material is best for bedroom shutters?

Hardwood, MDF and faux wood all suit a bedroom, as there's no steam to worry about. Hardwood has a natural grain and can be painted or stained, while MDF and faux wood give a smooth painted finish. We'll bring samples of each so you can compare them in your own room.
